Welcome to the first day in my annual Advent Calendar Blog! If you followed me last year on tumblr, you'll remember I shared cool and unique Christmas paraphernalia every day. Some days it was Christmas music, video clips, or vintage photographs. This year, I'm adding one more thing: a daily date illustration! The rules I've set for myself are simple: A square canvas and one hour to work on it. I can't wait to share all the awesome ideas I've got up my sleeve this Christmas!
Now, on to the calendar... Today is December 1st and I'm starting off with a holiday "How It's Made" about Candy Canes. The part to watch for is exactly when the candy canes get their crooks, it's a lot later in the process than you'd think. Also, the robot that boxes the candy canes is remarkably delicate and quick. But the best part for me will always be the stretching of the candy. No longer entirely done by hand (like some ribbon candy still is), the white candy cane base is pulled by spinning arms, and the result is shiny and sort of mesmerizing.
