It's December 2nd and today's illustration reflects a well known pair in Christmas lore, the two turtle doves. I'll try to stay away from more "12 Days of Christmas" references, but when I sketched today's idea I knew I had to do it. The turtle doves were roughly formed by repeating the wing shape and then merging the shapes in Illustrator. The heart forming when they meet was all too intentional.
As for today's post, I thought I might share a favorite Christmas track of mine, "What Child Is This Anyway?" by Sufjan Stevens. This is off Stevens' massive "Songs For Christmas" compilation, which is always the first album I listen to when the holidays roll around. This track in particular embodies why I like the album so much, since it takes an almost tired classic ("Greensleeves"/"What Child Is This?") and approaches it with a different sound altogether. Adding old electric organs, persistent drum, and ethereal pianos to his soft vocals make this song sound full and fresh. It manages to keep the reverence and awe of older recordings while building in a bit of melancholic undertones that mirror the sometimes dreary winter in which Christmas resides.
