Just finished watching this and I highly recommend it. Chronicling the advent of the transistor, through to the revolution of the microchip, this documentary does a great job at telling the lesser-known origins of silicon valley. It's a story that I think you'll find is both very similar and vastly different from the valley of today. One thing this piece handles well is scale; showing how big human drama, tiny technology, and massive global events of the time were all intertwined.
As of now, this episode of American Experience is available for viewing free on the PBS website (follow the link) or on the wonderful PBS iPad app, like I did.
